VHS | INSTALLING UNDERGROUND INFRASTRUCTURE FOR AN AIRPORT

Construction projects rarely go off without a hitch, and that's part of what makes them exciting. In a recent video update, the Sy-Con team in Northwest Arkansas shared their progress on an ambitious infrastructure project, detailing the trials, triumphs, and team spirit that drive success.

Setting the Scene: Sewer Install Meets Airport Access Road

The project revolves around installing critical infrastructure—a sewer system intersecting an access road at a bustling airport. The team juggled multiple priorities: meeting tight deadlines, ensuring safety, and mitigating site challenges like unstable soil, no rain for months, and then a deluge of 8 inches in three days.

With trenches 8 feet deep, a trench box was deployed to avoid extending the benching, saving time and resources. This decision underscored the team's commitment to efficiency without compromising safety or quality.

One of the standout elements in the video is the leadership's hands-on approach. From guiding the placement of fencing to overseeing precise excavation, the superintendent ensured every detail was addressed. Even something as seemingly simple as fence alignment required precision due to the unique needs of the site, including airplane wingspans and strict airport guidelines.

The importance of adaptability was evident throughout. When rain was forecast, the team prepped the site to pause work without creating unnecessary mess or incurring extra costs. It’s a perfect example of proactive decision-making that minimizes long-term disruptions.

Working near an airport comes with a unique set of challenges. Dust control is critical due to the sensitive nature of jet engines, and the team received praise from airport advisory officials for their mitigation efforts. However, managing a swampy site with poor soil conditions added another layer of complexity.

Despite the challenges, the team took a "decision-first" approach. As the project leader mentioned in the video, "I may be making the wrong decision, but I'm making a decision, and I’ll stand by it." This decisiveness is a key takeaway for any project manager navigating uncertain conditions.
